Trips & Talks

The MM&DHS organises regular events covering a variety of historically fascinating topics and locations.

During the winter months, our 100 strong membership meets at 7:30 pm on the second Friday of each month to listen to talks from visiting speakers on a wide range of historical topics. Our current venue is the Sage Cross Methodist Church. In May, we gather for our Annual Lunch, and over the summer months, we  enjoy three or four trips to (local-ish) places of significant historical interest, usually NT or HHA properties.

COVID 19 NOTICE
All meetings and/or activities are currently suspended due to the Covid 19 Virus outbreak, and following Government Advice. The resumption of meetings is entirely dependent upon the loosening of restrictions and when Churches are allowed to reopen. Once this is known members will be notified either via the website or by the Secretary to individual members by telephone or email.

Melton Mowbray Time-Line

In its lifetime the Society has achieved much, but its most recent high point is arguably the Millennium exhibition which it staged at the Carnegie Museum and featured the history of the Town and Borough of Melton Mowbray, including a ‘Time-Line’. Sarah Wright, the daughter of a society member, was commissioned by the Society to do the graphics.
From time to time it is on display in St Mary’s Church. The ‘Time-Line’ has also been stored on DVD, copies of which can be obtained from the church authorities for a small fee which goes to the restoration fund. You can also use the button below to download a low-res pdf copy.

Our Own History

On 26th March 1957, the Melton Mowbray and District Branch of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society (LAHS) was formed and functioned as such until 21st September 1979 when it seceded from LAHS. Melton Mowbray and District Historical Society (MM&DHS) then became an autonomous entity.
The first chairman of the society was Mr H A J Dennison (a physicist at PERA). He was followed by the notable local historian Gilbert King, Cyril Bowes, Michael Loxton, Dr Alan Fox, Martin Burton, Peter Raikes and currently Rob Urquhart.

The Story of Melton Mowbray

Picture
Reprints of  The Story of Melton Mowbray by the late Philip E Hunt  are available from the aptly named Reprint – Local history publishers in Loughborough, Leicestershire. Philip was a member of the society and an esteemed amateur historian.

From their website,

“This reprint containing 150 pages includes many alterations that the late Mr Hunt made as side notes in the last edition and contains all photographs and maps that were used in the very first print run in 1957. May I thank Mr Hunt’s family for permission to reprint this most worthy publication. I am sure it will never be equalled.”

They have also reprinted another of Philip’s books, Ladies of Melton Mowbray’s History
